In November 2005, scientists whose work focuses on the Crown of the Continent eco-region gathered to determine what new scientific research is required to establish an ecological baseline snapshot of the Upper Flathead River Valley. This analysis was initiated in response to the immediate prospect of strip mining for coal in the Flathead Headwaters, which are located in British Columbia.
